Equus asinus

Domestic donkeys are hardy, intelligent animals that have worked alongside humans for thousands of years. Originally from desert regions of Africa, donkeys are known for their strength, sure-footedness, and calm personalities.

Donkeys live on farms, ranches, and sanctuaries around the world. They are well adapted to dry, rocky environments and have tough hooves and excellent balance. Their large ears help them stay cool by releasing heat and also allow them to hear sounds from far away.

Donkeys are herbivores, meaning they eat plants. Their diet includes grasses, hay, weeds, and shrubs. Donkeys are efficient eaters and need less rich food than horses, which helps them stay healthy. Too much sugary or rich food can actually be harmful to them.

Donkeys are social animals and form strong bonds with companions. They communicate using brays, body language, and facial expressions. Mother donkeys give birth to foals after a long pregnancy of about 12 months, and foals stay close to their mothers as they grow and learn.

Domestic donkeys play an important role in agriculture and transportation around the world. In many communities, they help carry supplies, pull carts, and support farming families. Today, donkeys are also used in therapy programs and as livestock guardians.

Did You Know?
Donkeys can live 30–50 years! Their loud bray can be heard up to 60 miles away in the right conditions. Donkeys are often called “stubborn,” but they are actually very cautious and think carefully before acting.
