Equus quagga

The plains zebra is one of the most recognizable animals of Africa, known for its bold black-and-white stripes and important role in grassland ecosystems across eastern and southern Africa.

Plains zebras live in open savannas, grasslands, and woodlands. They are highly social animals and travel in groups called herds, which helps protect them from predators. Each zebra has a unique stripe pattern, no two are exactly alike!

Plains zebras are herbivores, meaning they eat plants. Their diet mainly consists of grasses, and they are often among the first animals to graze in an area. By eating tougher grasses, they help make way for other grazers like wildebeest and antelope, supporting a balanced ecosystem.

Zebras are active both day and night and are constantly on the move in search of food and water. Mothers usually give birth to a single foal, which can stand and walk within minutes of being born. Foals learn to recognize their mother by her unique stripe pattern.

Plains zebras play a crucial role in their environment. Their grazing helps maintain healthy grasslands, prevents overgrowth, and supports many other species that depend on open habitats.

Did You Know?
Plains zebras can run up to 40 miles per hour! Their stripes may help confuse predators and even deter biting insects. Zebras also have excellent memories and can recognize herd members for years.
