Meet Red!

The Eastern screech owl is a tiny but mighty bird of prey native to forests, suburbs, and parks across the eastern United States. With their compact size, ear-like feather tufts, and incredible camouflage, these owls are expert hunters, feeding on insects, small mammals, and other birds.

Red has a special story. He was brought to Chehaw after someone found him as a baby in the wild and thought they could keep him as a pet. Luckily, Red now has a safe home with us, where he helps teach visitors about owls, wildlife conservation, and why wild animals belong in the wild.

Eastern screech owls play an important role in their ecosystems by controlling populations of rodents and insects, keeping their habitats healthy and balanced. At Chehaw, Red serves as an ambassador for understanding the fascinating behaviors of owls, the importance of protecting native wildlife, and the dangers of trying to keep wild animals as pets. Observing his bright eyes and hearing his soft trills up close gives guests a glimpse into the secret lives of these incredible nocturnal hunters.
