Meet Stanley!

African pancake tortoises are a truly unique reptile from the rocky savannahs of East Africa. Unlike most tortoises, their shells are flat, flexible, and lightweight, perfect for slipping into narrow crevices to hide from predators. This unusual adaptation makes them one of the most specialized tortoises in the world!

Pancake tortoises are herbivores, feeding on grasses and succulents in their natural habitat. Their ability to wedge into rock cracks not only keeps them safe but also allows them to navigate the rugged terrain of their environment efficiently. Sadly, Pancake Tortoises are threatened by habitat loss and collection for the pet trade, making conservation and awareness critical for their survival.

At Chehaw, our pancake tortoise helps visitors learn about unique adaptations, the diversity of reptile life, and the importance of protecting endangered species. Watching them up close shows that even the smallest and flattest creatures can have incredible survival skills and play an important role in their ecosystems.
