Chehaw is home to two brown rats named Tom and Jaq!

Brown rats are a highly adaptable and intelligent rodent found all around the world. Known for their keen senses, problem-solving skills, and social nature, brown rats are fascinating survivors that can thrive in a variety of environments.

In the wild, brown rats play an important role in ecosystems by helping break down organic material and serving as prey for larger predators. Despite their reputation in cities, they are also excellent for studying animal behavior and learning how animals interact in groups.

At Chehaw, our brown rats help visitors understand that even animals often seen as pests have important ecological roles and remarkable abilities. Observing them navigate tunnels, forage, and interact provides a window into the cleverness and adaptability of these resilient creatures.
