East African savannah pouched rats are a small but extraordinary rodent with a talent that goes far beyond its size! Native to the savannahs of East Africa, these rats are intelligent, curious, and social, with large cheek pouches they use to carry food almost like tiny grocery bags.

What makes these rats truly remarkable is their ability to help humans in life-saving ways. Trained populations have been used to detect landmines in former war zones and even sniff out signs of tuberculosis in medical samples. Their keen sense of smell and quick learning make them one of nature’s tiniest but most effective helpers.

In the wild, savannah pouched rats play important roles in their ecosystems, foraging for seeds and insects, which helps maintain balance in the savannah. At Chehaw, our pouched rats are ambassadors for wildlife education and conservation, teaching visitors that even small animals can have a huge impact. Watching them explore and interact up close shows that brains, not size, are what make a creature extraordinary!
